The North East will be home to two Women's Championship record attendance setters this season.

Newcastle are set to welcome local rivals Sunderland to St James' Park for a league clash.

That's because club officials confirmed that more than 20,000 tickets have already been sold for the Tyne-Wear derby on March 23 - a figure which will break the league attendance record.

It is currently held by Sunderland, set in the reverse derby-day fixture - the first professional one - held at the Stadium of Light where 15,387 people saw Newcastle win the bragging rights.

Now Newcastle are confident that they will be able to beat that figure and set a new league record, but are also aiming to go one further and set a new club record.

A club spokesperson said: "We’ve officially sold over 20,000 tickets for the Tyne-Wear derby at St. James' Park! We’ve already smashed the league record, and now we’re aiming to break our own!

"Tickets start from just £2—support our lasses and grab your ticket today!"

A crowd of 20,000 would not be the biggest attendance at a Newcastle Women league game, as 22,134 witnessed the Lasses' first game at St James' Park which saw the team beat Alnwick Town 4-0 in 2022.

And in August 2024, the team won the Sela Cup in front of around 37,000 fans - beating AC Milan to the trophy.

The Lasses have a 100 per cent record at St James' Park, winning every single game including a cup semi-final on penalties.

Newcastle sit in seventh in the Championship currently, but have two games in hand on most other teams in the division. They are nine points off league leaders Birmingham City. Sunderland meanwhile, occupy the place in the table above their rivals, but have played twice more.

Both teams have ambitions of promotion, but the North East team in the best position to take on that challenge at the moment are Durham who sit in third, only three points behind Birmingham.
